- Abstract:The Track Imaging Cerenkov Experiment (TrICE) is a prototype Cerenkov telescope currently in operation at Argonne National Laboratory. The telescope is designed to image cosmic-ray air showers and employs a high resolution camera to allow the discrimination of "direct" Cerenkov emission generated by a primary cosmic ray from that of the secondary air shower particles. In addition to providing the means for a precision measurement of cosmic-ray composition, the ability to tag cosmic-ray air showers on an event-by-event basis suggests a novel background rejection method for ground-based gamma-ray telescopes. We'll discuss the TrICE telescope and the potential use of this technique in future gamma-ray instruments.
