From South Pole to Science

IceTopThe surface array, called IceTop, will consist of 160 tanks of ice, each instrumented with two standard IceCube optical modules, to detect showers of secondary particles generated by interactions of high-energy cosmic rays in the atmosphere. |
Processing and FilteringThe raw data rates collected by the IceCube detector far exceed our daily satellite bandwidth allocations. To allow physics analysis to happen as quickly as possible, the first level of reconstruction and event filtering happens in near real-time at the South Pole station. |

Data Movement and SPADEA suite of software which controls the transfer of data from the South Pole to the Northern Hemisphere data warehouse, as well as the archival of data on tape at the South Pole. |
