University of Wisconsin - River Falls and Upward Bound
- Upward Bound

- "Ice"breaker"
For the summers of 2004-2006 IceCube has provided curriculum and support for the Upward Bound program at UW-River Falls. Upward Bound provides opportunities for high school students from low-income families, high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelors degree, and low-income, first-generation military veterans to succeed in pre-college performance and ultimately in higher education pursuits. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rates at which participants enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. Features of this program are:
- The Upward Bound class was taught by two teachers with Antarctic field experience with the Teachers Experiencing Antarctica and Arctic (TEA) program.
- The course ran for two seven day sessions, the first time with 9 and 10 grade students, the second with 11 and 12 graders.
- In addition to teaching the students, the TEA teachers served as mentors for the pre-service teachers, who observed and assisted with the first group of students in the seven day course.
- They continued in this role for the next group of students, but also took the lead for one portion of one day.
- This provided important in-class training for the pre-service teachers but in a more comfortable environment where they have had the advantage seeing first-hand how an experienced teacher presented the material and work with the students.
