In Memoriam: Héctor Rubenstein
It is with deep sorrow we announce that our colleague and friend Héctor Rubinstein passed away last Saturday the 8th of August 2009 at Ingarö in the Stockholm archipelago.
Héctor was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1933. After studies at University of Buenos Aires he did his PhD at Columbia University. He later became a professor at the Weizmann Institute in Israel before moving to Sweden in the 1980ies. He was a professor at Uppsala University and after retirement affiliated with Stockholm University where he was active until the end.
Héctor made major contribution to theoretical physics in many areas such as the early development of string theory, QCD sum rules and lately the role of magnetic fields in the Universe.
Héctor was one of the driving forces to establish the field of Astroparticle Physics in Sweden. He was a very important and enthusiastic member of the Swedish group, which joined AMANDA in 1992 and continued to be a strong supporter of AMANDA and IceCube even after he left the collaboration in 2000. He had a strong and colourful personality with firm opinions on science as well as Swedish science policy. He made significant and valuable contributions in all areas and will be long remembered and truly missed.
