Data Analysis Software Developer
Job Requirements
A minimum of 5 years of programming experience is desired. Applicants must have excellent communication skills and must be able to work with minimal supervision.
The ideal candidate has experience with software development in an academic or research environment, in fields such as particle physics or astonomy.
Required Experience:- Minimum 1 years Python development experience
- Minimum 2 years C/C++ development experience
- Familiarity with Subversion revision control system
- Familiarity with issue tracking systems (e.g. Trac or Mantis)
- Familiarity with a variety of UNIX-like operating systems and architectures.
- Some familiarity with CMake build automation system and Boost C++ libraries.
- Excellent team player with the ability to work independently
Degree Requirements
B.S. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physical Science or equivalent will be considered.
Principal Job Duties
The incumbent will be expected to work closely with principal investigators, researchers and scientists to determine software needs and develop software systems to optimize data collection, simulation data production, and research results.
More specifically, the successful candidate will work with IceCube's principal investigators, scientists and software team to:
- Maintain and update data analysis core software framework (mainly C++, some Python);
- Ensure core software portability within the varying software and hardware environments across the collaboration.
- Optimize performance of data analysis and detector simulation software.
- Improve documentation of analysis software.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a research institution with an international reputation in physical sciences research and education. The Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center (WIPAC) is a research center in the Graduate School with responsibility for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a kilometer-scale neutrino detector at the South Pole. The detector consists of more than 5000 optical sensors deployed over one kilometer-deep in Antarctic ice. A collaboration of scientists from over thirty world-wide research institutions collectively participate in a research program to study high-energy neutrinos from cosmic sources. The collaboration uses the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the National Science Foundation's Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station for this research program.
